- In the diagram, assume that the pulley has no mass and is
- frictionless. The two masses joined by the string create a
- tension in the string. This tension supports the masses and must
- be constant throughout the string. The forces in this diagram are
- labeled.
- As for terms, the load is the object lifted by the pulley
- system, the load distance is the distance the load travels, the
- effort is the force exerted on the rope in order to move the load
- through the load distance, and the effort distance is the space
- over which the effort is applied.
